പോപ് ഫ്രാന്‍സിസ് : ജനങ്ങളുടെ മാര്‍പ്പാപ്പ

റോമന്‍ കാത്തലിക് ജനതയുടെ പരമാചാര്യനായി അര്‍ജന്റീനിയന്‍ കര്‍ദിനാള്‍ ജോര്‍ജ് മാരിയോ ബര്‍ഗോളിയോ(76) തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 266-ാത്തെ മാര്‍പ്പാപ്പയാണിദ്ദേഹം. ബ്യൂണസ് അയേഴ്‌സിലെ ആര്‍ച്ച് ബിഷപ്പായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു വരികയായിരുന്നു.

പോപ് എന്ന നിലയില്‍ നിരവധി പ്രത്യേകതകള്‍ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനവകാശപ്പെടാം. ആധുനിക കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍ യൂറോപ്പിനു പുറത്തുനിന്ന് തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ പോപ് ആണിദ്ദേഹം. ആദ്യ തെക്കന്‍ അമേരിക്കന്‍ പോപും ഈ പദവിയിലെത്തുന്ന ആദ്യ ജെസ്യൂട്ട് സഭാ പ്രതിനിധിയും ഇദ്ദേഹം തന്നെ. കൂടാതെ സെന്റ് ഫ്രാന്‍സിസ് അസീസി എന്ന നാമം സ്വീകരിച്ച ആദ്യ പോപും ഇദ്ദേഹമാണ്. മാര്‍പ്പാപ്പയായശേഷം ആദ്യത്തെ പൊതുജനസമ്പര്‍ക്കത്തില്‍ത്തന്നെ പോപ് ഫ്രാന്‍സിസ് പരമ്പരാഗത രീതികളെ മാറ്റിമറിച്ചു. ജനങ്ങളെ ആശീര്‍വദിക്കുന്നതിനു പകരം തനിക്കുവേണ്ടി പ്രവര്‍ത്ഥിക്കുവാന്‍  ജനങ്ങളോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം ചെയ്തത്. മാര്‍പ്പാപ്പയായി തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടശേഷം മറ്റു കര്‍ദിനാള്‍മാരില്‍നിന്നും ഉയര്‍ന്ന പീഠത്തില്‍ നില്‍ക്കാന്‍ ഇദ്ദേഹം വിസമ്മതിച്ചു.
ഇറ്റലിയില്‍നിന്നും കുടിയേറിയ റെയില്‍വേ ജോലിക്കാരനായിരുന്ന മാരിയോ ജോസ് ബെര്‍ഗോളിയോയുടെയും വീട്ടമ്മയായിരുന്ന റെജീന മരിയ സിവോറിയുടെയും മകനായി 1936 ഡിസംബര്‍ 17 ന് ബ്യൂണസ് അയേഴ്‌സില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. 1958 മാര്‍ച്ച് 11ന് ഈശോസഭയില്‍ അംഗമായി.  1969 ഡിസംബര്‍ 13 ന് പൗരോഹിത്യം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. 1973 മുതല്‍ 1979 വരെ അര്‍ജന്റീനയുടെ ജെസ്യൂട്ട് പ്രൊവിന്‍ഷലായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു.  ബ്യൂണസ് അയേഴ്‌സിന്റെ സഹായമെത്രാനായി 1992ല്‍ നിയമിതനായി. 1998 ഫെബ്രുവരി 28ന് ഇതേ രൂപതയുടെ ആര്‍ച്ച് ബിഷപ്പായി. ജോണ്‍ പോള്‍ രണ്ടാമന്‍ മാര്‍പ്പാപ്പ 2001 ഫെബ്രുവരി 21ന് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ കര്‍ദിനാള്‍ പദവിയിലേക്കുയര്‍ത്തി.
പുതിയ മാര്‍പ്പാപ്പയ്ക്ക് സ്പാനിഷ്, ഇറ്റാലിയന്‍, ജര്‍മ്മന്‍ ഭാഷകളറിയാം. ലളിതജീവിതമാണദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുഖമുദ്ര. സമൂഹത്തിലെ പാവപ്പെട്ടവരോട് സഹാനുഭൂതി പുലര്‍ത്തുമ്പോഴും ലിബറേഷന്‍ തിയോളജി എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പുരോഹിതര്‍ക്ക് രാഷ്ട്രീയപ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തിലും മറ്റും ഇടപെടാന്‍ സാധ്യത നല്‍കുന്ന ദൈവശവസ്ത്രത്തോട് അനുഭാവം പുലര്‍ത്തുന്നില്ല എന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്.

Pope Francis I, A Pope of the People

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (76) from Argentina was elected the 266th Pope of Roman Catholic Church on 13 March, 2013.  He was the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires.  He has several firsts as a Pontiff.  He is the first non - European Pope in the modern era, the first South American  Pope, the first Jesuit to be a Pope and the first Pontiff to adopt the name of  St. Francis Assisi. The new Pope also broke with the tradition in his first public act of facing the 150,000 people packed in the
St. Peter’s square. Instead of blessing the crowd first, he asked them to pray for him. The Pontiff  broke with another tradition by refusing to use a platform to elevate himself above the Cardinals surrounding him while being introduced as the new Pope.
He was born on Dec. 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires to an Italian immigrant father  who worked in the railways and his wife Regina Maria Sivori, a housewife. He entered the Society of Jesus on 11 March, 1958 and was ordained as a priest on 13 December, 1969. He served as the Jesuit Provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was named Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992, and became the  Archbishop of the same diocese on 28 February 1998. John Paul II made him a Cardinal on 21 February, 2001.
He speaks Spanish, Italian and German. He leads a very simple life. He is considered a conservative with regard to abortion and same-sex marriage. Although he is pro-poor, he is against promoting Liberation Theology that encourages priests to engage in political activism.
