നൈജീരിയന്‍ നോവലിസ്റ്റ് ചിനുവ ആച്ചെബി അന്തരിച്ചു

ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ ഇതിഹാസപുരുഷനായിരുന്ന നൈജീരിയന്‍ എഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ ചിനുവെ ആച്ചെബി അന്തരിച്ചു. 82 വയസ്സായിരുന്നു. 'ആധുനിക ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ സാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ പിതാവ്' എന്നാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.
ഒരു കാറപകടത്തില്‍ പരിക്കേറ്റ് ശരീരത്തിന്റെ പാതി തളര്‍ച്ചയിലായ ഇദ്ദേഹം 1990 മുതല്‍ അമേരിക്കയിലായിരുന്നു താമസം. മാന്‍ ബുക്കര്‍ ഇന്റര്‍നാഷണല്‍ പ്രൈസ് ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ നിരവധി സാഹിത്യപുരസ്‌ക്കാരങ്ങള്‍ നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. 2009 മുതല്‍ മരണം വരെ അമേരിക്കയിലെ ബ്രൗണ്‍ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയില്‍ പ്രൊഫസറായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിരുന്നു.
1930 നവംബര്‍ 16ന് നൈജീരിയയിലെ പ്രബല ഗോത്രവിഭാഗമായ ഇഗ്‌ബോ വംശത്തില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. അനംബ്ര സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഒഗിദി എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിലായിരുന്നു ജനനം. പാരമ്പര്യമായി കഥപറച്ചിലുകാരായ ഇഗ്‌ബോകളുടെ കഥകളോടുള്ള ജനിതകാഭിമുഖ്യം ഇദ്ദേഹം ഒരു നോവലിസ്റ്റായതിന്റെ പിന്നിലെ പ്രേരകമായി വര്‍ത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാവാം.
1958ല്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകൃതമായ 'തിംഗ്‌സ് ഫാള്‍ എപാര്‍ട്ട്' ആണ് പ്രഥമനോവല്‍. സാമ്രാജ്യത്വം ആഫ്രിക്കയില്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ ആഘാതങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞ ഈ നോവല്‍ ഒരു കോടിയിലധികം കോപ്പികള്‍ വിറ്റഴിഞ്ഞത്രേ! 'നോ ലോംഗര്‍ അറ്റ് ഈസ്' (1960), 'ആരോ ഓഫ് ഗോഡ്' (1964), 'എ മാന്‍ ഓഫ് ദി പീപ്പിള്‍' (1966), 'ആന്റ്ഹില്‍സ് ഓഫ് സാവന്ന' (1987) എന്നിവയാണ് മറ്റു പ്രസിദ്ധ നോവലുകള്‍. ഇദ്ദേഹം മുഖ്യമായും ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലാണ് രചനകള്‍ നടത്തിയിരുന്നത്.

Nigerian Novelist Chinua Achebe Died
Famous Nigerian novelist, Chinua Achebe, who was a legendary figure in the African lieterature, died at the age of 82. Achebe is popularly known as the ‘father of modern African literature’.
He had been living in the US since 1990, following injuries from a car crash which had left him partially paralysed. He has bagged many international acclaims including the prestigious Man Booker International Prize. He served as a professor at Brown University in the United States from 2009 until his death.
Chinua Achebe was born in the Igbo village of Ogidi on November 16, 1930. The Igbo people are one of the largest and most influential ethnic groups in Nigeria. Storytelling was a mainstay of the Igbo tradition and an integral part of the community. This genetic aptitude towards stories may influenced Achebe in becoming a novelist.
‘Things Fall Apart’, published in 1950, was his first novel. His later novels include ‘No Longer at Ease’ (1960), ‘Arrow of God’ (1964), ‘A Man of the People’ (1966), and ‘Anthills of the Savannah’ (1987). Achebe wrote his novels in English.
